True Creativity abounds within Borders

Creating within boundaries takes more creativity than being handed a pattern or given the sky as one’s limits. Pull some yarn, juice caps, glue, tissue paper, paint and some glaze together with a little time and inspiration you will see that your child has what it takes to be truly creative at our Create with Me Art Studio.

The best part is we display the artwork that day in the studio until you take it home. You will be very pleased and surprised when your child is given the freedom to experiment and express themselves through the new mediums and art supplies given each day. They will be liberated and you will be amazed. Extensive studies have shown the connection between art and creativity in all disciplines. Creative venues of art in our design studio are more than just a fun; they enable contemplation of what we know, see, and what we want to communicate with others.

Creating within limits pushes artistic talent to the limits and forces the true artist out of the shell. What do we mean by this? When you are given a pattern you learn to mimick and copy; which are skills that need to be learned. But to be given three or four recyclables, a few art mediums and asked to create something causes one to tap into that left side of the brain and the creativity that you never knew was there.

We know all to well that a child’s natural creative abilities are often under-estimated and sometimes even unnoticed. Only after experiencing various mediums do thought patterns and plans of action fall into place. At the Playseum we always have scissors, spray bottles, tape dispensers, glue, crayons and markers available. Young children tend to have natural desire to explore all aspects of the creative experience before they are ready to master specific skills. For example; as a child is in the process of making a pinch pot out of clay he/she may decide that it is more fun to spray the clay with the water bottle and watch the clay turn colors and get soft and  pliable in their hands. Remember all of this is a new learning experience and through experimentation they begin to understand on their own that while lots of water might be fun it makes a very flimsy pinch pot and no water at all causes dryness and cracking.

Gina Seebachan is the Creative Curator for the Playseum. Every week, she develops new and innovative crafts that stimulate the creative abilities that children possess when given freedoms within boundaries.
